1. Selective Networks
First of all it is not necessary that you should have a business profile on all social networks. Select a few networks where you think you would find your targeted market and focus on these networks. Facebook and Twitter are two major networks and most probably you will find your targeted audience there but there are also many small social networks catering the needs of special interest groups, find such networks and join them.
2. Responsive Profiles
There are small business on social networks who just use their profiles to post updates about their business. They do not even response to messages and queries sent to them from the people they have connected with. Such profiles are a dead end to your social networking capabilities. Remember social web is about people to people interaction, so if you don't interact you can't expect the response you desire.
3. Act Humanly
Another factor that should be kept in mind is that social web is not like a website where you can just put up messages. Act like you would act in the company of people in your every day life, share interesting thoughts, make witty comments, be polite and take genuine interest in people. Modesty goes a long way.
